Easy Mod: Sennheiser HD555 to HD595
January 13, 2013 in Miscellaneous
Here’s a laugh, I’m going to explain how to convert your Senheiser HD555 headphones into HD595 (note it seems the 595s have been replaced by the HD598 as it is, but you can still get a pair of HD595s if you would like) by doing an extremely simple modification.
It is common practice for manufacturers of technology products to take measures to lower manufacturing expenses. Sennheiser are no exception, the HD555 lineup were designed to be an affordable variation of the higher end HD595 series headphones. In order to save money in the manufacturing process, companies will purposely disable certain features of their higher end product, allowing them to ultimately only have to mass produce the same product.
Aside from the differences to the headphone shell, the only difference between the audio drivers in the HD555 and HD595 headphones is a very simple piece of foam placed inside the HD555 which blocks off the rear vents. Because these headphones are both designed to be open back headphones, this piece of foam blocks off the vent slightly altering the frequency response of the headphones. Simply removing this piece of phone from each speaker is all it takes to upgrade your HD555 headphones.
How to Mod The Headphones
- Remove the foam cushions (the padding that goes over your ears) by simply pulling on them
- Remove the driver assembly with a screwdriver (I’ll add pictures here, but in the mean time you’ll see the process is extremely simple)
- Remove the black foam stuck on the back of the outside facing vents
- If you have had these headphones for a while, use a slightly moist cloth to clean any dust that has accumulated inside the headphones
That it. Seriously. The sound difference will be noticeable immediately. As I said before, the sound drivers are the exact same in these two headphones, if you were to purchase replacement drivers for your headphones, the label on the replacement drivers themselves distinctly say “HD 555 / HD 595″.
Congratulations, you have literally multiplied the value of your Sennheiser headphones.
